Repaint a Radiator with Hammerite Enamel in a 3-Coat Method Without Removal

Hammerite Radiator Enamel keeps its white up to about 90 degrees Celsius, enough for almost every domestic panel radiator on a condensing boiler. A three-coat repaint with a 240-grit key lets the radiator stay on the wall, with no draining, refilling, or inhibitor work.

Start with temperature. A radiator sitting at 40 degrees Celsius makes Hammerite solvent flash off before the film has time to level, leaving ridges that stay visible under later coats. Shut the valve at least six hours before painting, or begin before the heating comes on, and check that the panel feels close to room temperature on the back of your hand. The room itself should sit around 15 to 20 degrees Celsius so the enamel can flow properly.

Three coats earn their keep on an old radiator. One coat of Hammerite Radiator Enamel over old gloss leaves weak coverage at the reveals and along the top edge where a roller cannot reach. Two coats usually hide the old colour, though the sheen can still look uneven. The third coat evens the reflection, which matters in a north facing room where flat grey light makes patchy sheen read as dirt.

Prepare the existing enamel

Most radiators fitted before 2005 carry a factory stove-enamel finish, sometimes with a second layer of household gloss added by a previous owner. Both surfaces are hard, so Hammerite needs abrasion before it will hold. Work 240-grit aluminium oxide paper over every face, including the top grille slots and the return bends at each end, until the shine has gone and the surface looks evenly dull. The sanding creates a fine key for the new enamel to grip.

Rust changes the order. A radiator that has wept at a valve gland often shows brown staining at the bottom corner, and that area needs Hammerite Special Metals Primer or the equivalent. Brush it on and leave it for the full four hours specified on the tin. Leave sound old paint without primer. Extra primer on intact enamel wastes material and adds thickness the panel does not need. The visual test is simple: dull grey metal or orange bloom gets primer, dull white paint is ready for enamel after sanding.

Dust is the last job before opening the enamel. A tack cloth lifts aluminium-oxide residue that a dry rag tends to move from one place to another. Wipe the top edge twice, because grit gathers there and the first brush stroke can drag it straight into the wet film.

Brush the hidden face first

Begin at the back of the radiator while the brush is clean and your hand is steady. A long-reach radiator brush, with the head set at 45 degrees on a wire shank, reaches the wall side and the pipe tails. It costs about 4 to 7 pounds and lasts through many jobs.

Doing the hidden face first also keeps the front clean. Once the front is wet, reaching an arm behind the panel is awkward and usually leaves a smear on the visible enamel.

Move to the front in vertical bands, working from top to bottom. Keep each band roughly the width of the brush, then move sideways only when that strip is finished.

Hammerite Radiator Enamel is thinner than Hammerite’s general metal paint and needs a light load. Dip only a third of the bristle, tap the brush on the tin rim, lay the enamel on, and leave it to settle.

Overbrushing is the common failure. At 18 degrees Celsius the enamel starts to tack within two or three minutes, and a brush pulled back through half-set film tears the surface. Once a vertical band has been left, stay off it.

The top grille slots need a lighter touch. Work along each slot with the tip of the brush, then lift surplus paint with an almost-dry brush. Paint left sitting in the slots can pool, then run down the visible face while it cures.

Recoat within the Hammerite timing

The tin gives four hours to recoat. Earlier than that, the first film remains soft and the second coat can lift it. After about sixteen hours, the first coat has cured hard enough for the next coat to take less easily, so a light 320-grit scuff between coats two and three restores the bite. In a warm dry room, the practical rhythm is one coat in the morning, one in early evening, and the third the next morning.

Humidity stretches the timetable. A bathroom radiator repainted with the door shut and a damp towel on the rail can still feel tacky at six hours. Open a window, keep the extractor running, and let the enamel go overnight before the next coat. Full hardness takes longer than surface dryness suggests. Give the final coat a clear 24 hours before reopening the valve, and allow longer in a room that stays cool.

Choose a white that sits quietly in the room

Brilliant white against a coloured wall pulls attention straight to the radiator. Farrow and Ball built part of its following by selling paint in tones that read as colour without shouting, and the same idea helps with radiators: make the panel settle into the wall behind it. Match the radiator as closely as Hammerite white allows to a wall colour such as Farrow and Ball Cornforth White or Skimming Stone, both of which hold up in weak daylight, and the radiator becomes less of a feature.

North facing rooms are hard on cool whites. The light carries a blue cast for much of the day, so a stark white radiator can look faintly grey and cold. A warmer off-white wall gives the eye a softer background, and Hammerite white sits more quietly there than it does against a saturated colour. If the wall already has a strong shade, the radiator will stand out no matter how carefully the coats are applied, so the wall colour sets the direction and the radiator follows.

Small bedroom wall space makes the choice more obvious. A radiator often takes up the one wall long enough for a bed, and a receding finish buys back visual room without moving a fixing. Command strips and a gallery arrangement above a radiator can work because the eye reads the wall as continuous, and a lightweight frame hung on adhesive strips rated for its weight stays clear of the heat column when it sits above the 150 mm line.

Estimate paint and time for a double panel

A standard 600 by 1000 mm double-panel radiator has roughly 1.2 square metres of visible front face, plus about the same again on the hidden rear panel and the convector fins between them. Hammerite Radiator Enamel covers around 6 square metres per litre on smooth metal, with lower coverage on fins. Three coats across the full 2.4 square metres of a double panel come close to 1.2 litres in theoretical coverage, while brush loss and fin work push real use toward a full 750 ml tin for one radiator painted properly on both sides.

The time spent waiting outweighs the time spent brushing. Sanding a double panel takes 30 to 40 minutes if the fins are treated properly. Each coat takes about 20 minutes of brushwork, followed by the curing interval. That delay is why many jobs stop at two coats and keep the uneven sheen. The extra coat is easy to resent while the radiator is still cold and the room is out of use. Once weak northern light falls across the front, the difference is usually visible in the reflection before it shows in the colour itself.
