2 Coats of Zinsser BIN Primer That Block Tannin Bleed on a Painted Mahogany Chest
A 1960s mahogany-veneered chest can push reddish-brown tannin through pale paint within 48 hours. Two coats of Zinsser BIN, the shellac-based primer sealer, close the grain where a single acrylic undercoat often leaves stains showing through.
Pink or tan patches on a pale-painted mahogany chest come from tannin moving through the coating as it dries. Mahogany, oak, and cedar contain water-soluble extractives, and those extractives travel toward the surface when water-based paint wets the timber. Zinsser BIN, made by Rust-Oleum and sold in 400ml and 946ml tins through UK and European trade merchants, uses shellac carried in alcohol. It dries in around 45 minutes and avoids re-wetting the tannin-bearing surface in the way water-borne primers can. On mahogany, two coats matter because open-grain veneer can leave pinhole paths through a single coat.
Why the first BIN coat can leave ghost stains
One coat of BIN on mahogany veneer can look solid while wet and still look covered when touch-dry. The staining usually appears later. As the alcohol flashes off, the shellac film shrinks slightly, and over open grain it can thin at each pore.
Over the next one to three days, tannin can rise through those weaker points. The marks often look like faint amber rings or narrow shadows that trace the grain instead of forming random blotches.
The second coat goes on after the first has hardened, which BIN reaches in roughly 45 minutes at 20 degrees Celsius. Cross-laying the second coat, brushing at 90 degrees to the first pass, closes pore openings that the first coat only bridged in part. On a chest of drawers, the top and drawer fronts show failures first because they receive the most handling and the strongest tannin pressure.
Alcohol-based shellac primer has a strong solvent smell. Ventilation is part of the job during application, and a respirator rated for organic vapour is standard trade practice when BIN is sprayed in an enclosed room. Brushes clean in methylated spirit because water will not dissolve cured shellac.
Cleaning the mahogany before primer
Old mahogany chests often carry wax, silicone furniture polish, and hand grease built up over decades. BIN bonds to bare or lightly abraded timber, but silicone contamination interrupts the film and causes fisheyes. These show as small round craters where the primer pulls away from the contaminated spot.
Start with white spirit on a lint-free cloth and wipe the whole carcass. Turn or replace the cloth frequently so the wax and oily polish are lifted away from the surface.
Follow with methylated spirit. That second wipe helps cut remaining shellac or French polish residue that white spirit may leave behind. Allow about 20 minutes for the surface to flash off.
Sanding follows degreasing. If wax remains on the surface, abrasive paper can drive it into fresh scratches. A 180-grit abrasive on a cork block knocks back the old finish and gives the primer a reliable key.
Veneer changes the pressure and the tool choice. Mahogany veneer from the 1960s is often around 0.6mm thick, and an orbital sander running at speed can cut through to the substrate at edges within seconds. Hand-sanding along the grain gives better control on drawer fronts, corners, and cockbeaded edges.
Scratches that remain at the primer stage can telegraph through gloss topcoats. Fill them before the second BIN coat, while the first coat is acting as a pale witness layer that makes damage easier to see.
A short note on tinting
BIN accepts a small amount of universal tinter. A light grey tint under a grey or dark finish coat can reduce the number of finish coats needed, provided the tint stays below 5 percent of volume so the shellac still cures hard.
Filling grain and small veneer damage
Mahogany is an open-grain timber, so paint can bridge the pores unevenly unless the grain is filled. One option is water-based grain filler before primer. It fills the pores flush and sands back easily, although it does introduce water to the tannin-bearing surface, so it needs to dry fully and then receive the first BIN coat promptly.
Another route is filling after the first primer coat with a fine surfacing filler. That keeps bare timber away from water and adds a separate sanding stage. The first coat also makes small dips and torn grain easier to see under a work light.
Lifted veneer and chips need repair before priming. Liberon and other restoration suppliers sell hard wax filler sticks and shellac-based burn-in sticks for veneer chips. On a piece that will be painted, the repair material needs stability and sandability more than a colour match. A two-part wood filler from the automotive or joinery range sets in around 20 minutes and sands to a hard, non-shrinking surface that takes BIN cleanly, without a witness line.
A loose corner usually means the original animal-glue bond has failed. Fresh PVA worked under the lifted veneer with a palette knife can rebond it when the area is clamped over a caul. Place wax paper between the caul and the veneer so squeeze-out does not glue the caul to the repair.
Twenty-four hours of clamp time is conservative for PVA on veneer. After that, the repaired patch sands flush and joins the same priming sequence as the rest of the carcass. Use raking light from a low work lamp during the final flush sanding, because even a slightly proud repair will catch light under satin or gloss paint.
What goes over cured BIN
BIN functions as a primer sealer only. Left exposed, it chalks, marks easily, and gives no abrasion resistance. Once both coats have cured for a couple of hours, the surface can take water-based eggshell, acrylic-alkyd hybrid paint, or oil-based satin after a light 240-grit denib.
Water-based topcoats are common on pale furniture because oil-based whites yellow over time. Acrylic-alkyd hybrids, sold by several trade brands, brush like oil and dry like water-based paint. They also cure harder than pure acrylic, which helps on a drawer top where objects are dragged across the surface.
Use two thin topcoats. The first topcoat over BIN may flash matte in patches where the primer absorbs unevenly, and the second evens out the sheen.
After BIN has sealed the timber, topcoat choice becomes a question of durability and appearance. The shellac layer beneath has already stopped the bleed, so the finish coat is there to provide wear resistance, colour, and sheen.
Danish oil on sections left as bare wood
Danish oil is a blend of oil and varnish that penetrates and cures within the timber. It suits a mahogany chest being kept as bare wood. Painted sections need clean, keyed timber, because oil in the grain stops primer bonding.
This matters on mixed-finish pieces, such as a chest with a natural mahogany top and painted carcass. Danish oil goes on the natural section with a lint-free cloth in thin passes. Each pass is wiped back after 10 minutes so no surface film builds, with 6 to 8 hours between coats. Three coats build a low sheen that resists water rings better than wax alone.
That oiled top must be masked off completely before BIN is used on the painted sections. Oil overspray can spoil primer adhesion, and a stray brush mark of shellac primer on oiled mahogany leaves a visible mark that the two finish systems will not disguise. On a mixed chest, the masked edge between oil and paint remains the part the coating system leaves most exposed.
