“Bad Sisters” & “Derry Girls” Bring Girl Power to 2023 BAFTA TV Awards

The BAFTA TV Awards took place on Sunday night and they were a glorious celebration of girl power in the television landscape. The list of winners was filled with acclaimed female-driven shows, with Bad Sisters and Derry Girls leading the way with two wins each.

Bad Sisters is one of Apple TV+’s biggest hits of the past year, and the BAFTA voters recognized its excellence. They gave it the trophy for the best drama series, over the likes of The Responder, Sherwood, and Somewhere Boy, while its star Anne-Marie Duff picked up an award for her supporting turn.

BAFTA voters also bid farewell to Channel 4’s hit teen sitcom Derry Girls on Sunday night and found a way to say a proper goodbye almost a year after its final. This series won two awards: best scripted comedy and best female comedy performance for Siobhán McSweene.

Kate Winslet was also one of the night’s shiniest stars, and she collected the award for the best actress with I Am… Ruth, which was also named the best single drama. As for the best actor award, the field was as crowded as it gets, but Ben Whishaw managed to beat the likes of Cillian Murphy and Gary Oldman to win a trophy for his acclaimed performance in This Is Going to Hurt.
