2023 Indie Spirit Awards: “Everything Everywhere” & “The Bear” Among Top Winners

This year’s awards season is slowly nearing its final stage, and Independent Spirit Awards set the tone for the Oscars just a week ahead of the film’s biggest night. Everything Everywhere All at Once continued its winning streak with historic seven wins, while The Bear picked up two TV awards.

Seeing Everything Everywhere win the best feature at the Spirit Awards wasn’t much of a surprise—after all, this was the most nominated film at the ceremony, with a total of eight nods. What did surprise us was seeing it make history by winning big in all seven categories it was nominated for, becoming the most-awarded show ever at this ceremony.

Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert won awards for their work as directors and screenwriters, while Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, and Stephanie Hsu picked up trophies for their respective performances. Paul Rogers won the award for best editing, bringing the film’s total to seven accolades.

As for the television field, which was originally introduced just three years ago, The Bear was the biggest winner of the night. It was named the best new scripted series, while its star Ayo Edebiri picked up a trophy for her supporting performance in this culinary dramedy.

The 38th Independent Spirit Awards were hosted by Hasan Minhaj, and they took place at Santa Monica Pier, California on March 4.
