The True Story Behind That Charming Bleacher Scene in ‘The Princess Diaries’

The Princess Diaries was a star-making role for Anne Hathaway. It’s become a modern classic that’s cemented in the minds of young people everywhere.

It’s got some really iconic scenes and strong performances that left an indelible mark on cinemagoers. But, did you know that one of the most beloved scenes in the movie wasn’t scripted? In a special tribute to the late director Gary Mashall who helmed the movie, Hathaway reveals that the scene where her character slips in the bleachers wasn’t written in the script.

It had just rained when they shot it. “We were losing light and we had to go on these bleachers and they did their best to wipe them down,” said Hathaway. But due to her own clumsiness, she slipped and fell on a puddle of water that had accumulated on the bleachers. Hathaway just laughed off her blunder.

Gary Marshall realized that this scene was charming which is why he kept it in the final cut of the film.
