When Laverne Cox isn’t busy with taping, she’s busy slaying at red carpet events and advocating LGBTQ rights. Suffice it to say that she’s one in-demand celebrity.
But, on the rare occasion when she’s got nothing much to do, she finds time to reflect. She often thinks about the moment she first came out to the world as Laverne and the honey-colored loose braids that spurred her decision.
These days, she no longer needs the makeup to make her feel safe to come out of her shell. But, she and makeup artist Deja Smith is still hard at work to create more and more iconic looks for her.
“What I have come to understand about who I am as a trans woman of color, navigating this world, is that visibility is very revolutionary,” explains the makeup artist. I believe that’s why when she presents herself to the world, she always wanted to be an impeccable image, something iconic, slightly over the top at times, but you always have to give it to her because it’s pulled off with such class,” she continues.
