Slice an Autumn King 2 lengthways and the root gives a clear record of attack. Fresh, wet, reddish-brown galleries near the crown point to the first generation of Psila rosae, the adults flying from late April through early June. Older tunnels that have dried, gone corky, and turned dark brown down toward the tip come from the second generation in August and September. Those late tunnels are the ones that spoil a maincrop left in the ground for storage.

The colour changes the decision about protection. Fresh shallow damage at the shoulder usually means the mesh went on after the first flight had begun, or an edge sat loose against the soil. Dry, deep galleries show that the crop spent the autumn egg-laying window uncovered, the worst period for a variety intended for lifting in November. Autumn King stays usable in the soil longer than a Nantes type, so it spends more weeks exposed to that second flight. That longer standing time explains why a storage carrot can be hit harder than an early bunching crop growing in the same bed.

The six signs, in the order they tend to appear

The first sign is easy to miss unless carrot fly is already on your mind. Outer leaves turn rusty red or bronze, then yellow, usually on scattered plants because the larvae feed root by root. The second sign is a top that looks stunted and sits lower than its neighbours.

Third comes the evidence on the pulled root: thin, thread-like tunnels just under the skin, often running in a spiral. Fourth are the larvae themselves, cream coloured, legless, about 8 to 10mm long, sometimes still curled inside a gallery. Fifth is secondary rot, where the tunnels admit soft brown bacterial decay and stored roots collapse in the box. Sixth is forking or splitting, caused when early damage makes the growing tip react.

Signs one and two are often blamed on hunger or dry soil. The pattern separates them. Nutrient yellowing tends to run evenly along a row; carrot fly damage is patchy, and affected foliage usually goes red-bronze before it yellows. If one suspect plant lifts clean, pull three more before naming the fly. Leatherjackets and wireworm make wider, ragged holes, while Psila rosae leaves neat, narrow threads.

Damage in one season also predicts trouble on the same ground the next season. Pupae overwinter in the top few centimetres of soil, close to where the crop stood. That makes moving the carrot bed the strongest single cultural response after an attack.

Enviromesh works only when the edges stay sealed

The adult Psila rosae is about 5mm long, flies low, walks readily, and finds small openings. Standard Enviromesh with a hole size of roughly 1.35mm excludes carrot fly. The ultra-fine 0.8mm anti-thrip grade is unnecessary for this pest and can reduce airflow enough to heat the crop on hot days. Most failed covers have a fault at the perimeter.

Bury the mesh along every edge, 10 to 15cm deep, or hold it flat with a continuous line of scaffold boards or bags of sand. Gaps under a folded corner are enough for adults to enter. A few stones dropped at intervals leave little arches between them, so they are a weak substitute for a continuous weight.

Use one or two hoops of MDPE water pipe over the bed. The hoops keep the fabric off the foliage, which matters because a fly can lay through mesh where leaves are pressed hard against it. Leave slack in the cover. A drum-tight sheet touching leaf tips gives the female a surface close enough to the plant.

The cover needs to be on early. In most of the UK, that means covering by mid-April for the spring generation. For Autumn King intended to stand in the ground, the same cover needs to stay in place through September.

A mesh cover protects the bed while it remains sealed during flight periods. If you weed or thin, choose a still, cool evening, work quickly, and close every edge again. One afternoon with the cover folded back in late May can seed the bed with eggs.

Sowing date can reduce pressure on the cover. A sowing from about mid-May onward misses the worst of the first generation, although it still needs protection during the autumn flight. Thin sowing matters as well. Each thinning bruises foliage, and the crushed-leaf smell is what a female carrot fly follows from downwind. Pelleted seed sown to final spacing cuts thinning to a minimum.

Site the bed before the seed goes in

Psila rosae is a poor flyer and usually approaches low across open ground. A carrot bed placed behind a 1m solid barrier, a hedge, a row of runner beans on a wigwam, or a temporary board fence receives measurably fewer landings than a bed standing in the open. Height helps too, which is one reason raised beds and large containers set on a bench often escape with less damage.

Rotation gives another reduction before any mesh is unrolled. Since pupae overwinter in the soil where last year’s carrots grew, the next carrot bed should move as far as the plot allows, ideally the full length of an allotment. Parsnips, celery, celeriac, and parsley are hosts too, so keep those away from the old carrot ground in the rotation.

A short note on onions

Many gardening texts recommend interplanting onions to mask carrot smell. The masking effect is weak and short-lived, and it will not save an uncovered maincrop; grow onions for the onions.

The numbers on one covered Autumn King bed

Take a 3m by 1.2m bed of Autumn King, sown thinly at 4cm spacing across five drills. That gives roughly 375 roots. On an uncovered bed in a plot with a known history of carrot fly, losses of 40 to 70 percent of storage roots to tunnelling and secondary rot are ordinary. Industry experience and allotment experience both fall in that band on bad sites. At a 50 percent loss, 375 roots become about 187 saleable-quality roots.

Seal the same bed well and losses can drop toward single figures, with most failures coming from lapses during thinning or weeding. At 8 percent loss, about 345 roots remain usable. Covering that bed with generous overhang takes a sheet of roughly 3m by 2m, a length of MDPE pipe for hoops, and boards already on hand. The result is the difference between losing about two-thirds of a storage crop and keeping nearly all of it from the same planting.

After the first season, the running cost is almost nil because Enviromesh lasts for many years if it is folded dry and kept out of UV when out of use. The recurring cost is attention: fitting it before mid-April, keeping it closed during warm flight windows, and resealing it after every necessary lift.

Late lifting leaves its own mark

A bed can be sealed all summer with a 1.35mm sheet and still produce a stored root that opens in December with dry, corky galleries running to the tip. Those tunnels came from the autumn flight, often during the two or three weeks after the cover was lifted to make harvesting easier.

In a warm year the flight can run into October, and pupae left in the bed sit in the same ground a gardener may want for carrots again. The sealed sheet may have blocked the earlier flights; the stored root carries the mark of a short uncovered spell after the summer cover had already done its work.
