Compost Ready in 12 Weeks from a HotBin Mk2 on Grass Clippings and Cardboard

A HotBin Mk2 can run at 40 to 60 degrees Celsius using mown grass and torn corrugated cardboard, with usable compost from the base in roughly twelve weeks. The key is matching wet green clippings with enough soaked brown material and coarse bulking agent.

Grass clippings are the input most often mishandled in home composting. A HotBin Mk2 holds around 200 litres, and one cut from a modest lawn can give you 40 or 50 litres of wet clippings at once. Tip that whole load in without mixing and it settles into a dense, airless layer. The temperature drops, anaerobic bacteria take over, and the smell shifts toward ammonia and drainage.

The dull fix is also the reliable one. For every bucket of clippings, add roughly the same volume of shredded corrugated cardboard, plus a couple of handfuls of the bulking agent HotBin sells or wood chip of similar coarseness.

Cardboard is doing two separate jobs. It brings carbon to balance the nitrogen-heavy grass, and its shape holds open small air spaces so the pile can breathe. Pieces about the size of a playing card are adequate. Glossy or heavily printed card belongs in recycling, while plain brown packaging and the inner tube from a kitchen roll are useful feedstock.

Why the Mk2 keeps heat better than an open heap

The Mk2 is a moulded polypropylene box with roughly 50mm of expanded polypropylene insulation built into the walls. That insulation is the reason it behaves differently from an open Dalek-style plastic bin. In cold weather, an uninsulated bin can lose its heat to the surrounding air within a day, which is why traditional cold composting usually takes eight to twelve months.

The HotBin holds onto the metabolic heat produced by bacteria and feeds that warmth back into the mass. Once the contents are established, the core can sit between 40 and 60 degrees Celsius through a British winter.

That temperature range changes more than speed. Above about 55 degrees, weed seeds and many pathogens begin to die, so hot compost is less likely to return weed problems to beds than cold compost. Airflow is adjusted through the lid vent and the valve at the base, and the supplied thermometer probe goes into the top of the pile so you can see the actual core reading.

The first fortnight is the weak point. A new bin has little microbial life and little thermal mass, so the first fills need a bucket of already-active compost or a bag of HotBin activator layered in with the initial feeds. That starter material supplies the bacteria and some pre-warmed mass needed to get the process moving. If you skip it, the contents may sit close to outdoor temperature for weeks while the box appears to be doing nothing.

The moisture test

Squeeze a handful from the active layer. Running water means the pile is too wet and likely to stall; a dry, crumbling handful means the bacteria are going dormant. The target is damp like a wrung-out cloth, and cardboard is the easiest adjustment in either direction.

Feeding rhythm over twelve weeks

A HotBin performs best with small, frequent, mixed feeds. The weekly dump of garden waste causes more trouble than it saves, especially when most of the volume is fresh grass.

In practice, add material to the top every few days. Kitchen scraps, manageable portions of the week’s grass, matching cardboard, and a fork through the top 20cm keep the upper layer open and stop it forming a crust. Finished compost moves downward and matures near the base while fresh feed stays above it, so a working Mk2 becomes a continuous column rather than a single batch vessel.

This is where the twelve-week claim often gets misunderstood. Material added in week one, once the bin is already hot, can work down to the base hatch and be ready to harvest at around the twelve-week mark. Material added in week ten is still raw. The bin does not turn its whole contents into finished compost every twelve weeks; it releases a steady amount from the bottom while newer waste is breaking down above. New users often open the base hatch after a month, find unfinished material, and decide the system has failed.

Winter stretches the timetable. Bacteria are temperature dependent, and even an insulated box runs cooler when the air is near freezing and the feed arrives cold. Frozen grass clippings in January chill the core each time the lid is opened. The twelve-week figure is a warm-season figure, while a British winter batch usually needs longer.

The bulking agent is the supply people quietly run out of. Grass and cardboard, even in the right volumes, gradually lose the coarse structure that keeps the pile aerated because both materials break down faster than woody matter. A handful of wood chip or branded bulking agent every few feeds keeps air gaps in the core. Without that coarse fraction, the mix slowly compacts.

There is also a capacity limit hidden in the grass-to-cardboard rule. If one mowing produces 40 or 50 litres of wet clippings, the bin needs a similar volume of cardboard and some coarse bulking material to keep pace. A single Mk2 can be overtaken by a productive lawn faster than the sales copy tends to suggest.

The leachate valve at the base may drip dark liquid, and that is normal. Diluted heavily, perhaps one part leachate to ten parts water, it can feed established plants. Undiluted, it is strong enough to scorch. A tray under the tap catches the liquid; left alone, it pools below the bin and attracts flies.

Cardboard and the rain butt problem

Dry cardboard is hydrophobic enough to resist wetting. Added dry to an already dry pile, it can remain as intact brown flakes for months. Consistent breakdown usually comes from pre-soaking it before it goes into the HotBin.

A standard 210-litre water butt connected to a downpipe diverter fills from surprisingly little rain. Dunking cardboard in a bucket drawn from that butt before adding it to the bin changes how quickly it integrates with grass and kitchen waste. The water is soft and unchlorinated, which compost bacteria prefer over tap water.

In a dry spell, the same butt can be used for hand-watering containers, so the soaking habit fits with equipment many gardens already justify for drought resilience. It also keeps the cardboard step separate from the kitchen, where wet scraps and torn packaging quickly become awkward to store.

What the finished compost is useful for

Compost taken from the HotBin base hatch comes out darker, richer, and coarser than bagged multipurpose compost. It is not a like-for-like replacement for a seed mix or ordinary potting mix. Its nutrient load is high and variable, which makes it strong as a mulch or soil improver dug into beds, and weak as a standalone medium for seedlings that need a lean, sterile start.

For repotting established shrubs or hungry perennials, homemade HotBin compost works well mixed into John Innes No 3. That gives the loam-based structure and slow nutrient release of the John Innes formula, along with the microbial life and organic matter from the compost. John Innes No 3 is the highest-fertility grade in that soil-based range, formulated for mature plants in their final pots, and it holds water and nutrients in a way peat-based mixes cannot. A rough half-and-half blend by volume works for tomatoes in large containers and for potting on woody plants, while stretching expensive bagged loam considerably.

Coarse, part-broken cardboard sometimes survives the process. Screen the harvest through a 10mm riddle and the oversize pieces can go back into the top of the HotBin for another pass. That returned material also reinoculates fresh feed, which quietly answers the activator question after the first season.

One thing the base hatch still cannot tell you is whether the next run of clippings will leave the bin short of brown material before the cardboard pile catches up.
