15 centimetres that no drawer can reach

The sink basin drops into the cabinet at an angle, and the plumbing tailpiece plus P-trap occupy the centre of that cavity. A conventional drawer cannot run under a sink because the basin bottom sits lower than any drawer box would clear. What remains unusable is the vertical strip directly behind the decorative front panel, the fixed board that mimics a drawer face but opens onto nothing. Rev-A-Shelf tip-out trays, sold in the 6500 and 6580 series, mount a shallow polymer tray to that panel and let it hinge forward. The usable tray depth runs between 4 and 5 centimetres, but the swing clears enough of the 15 centimetre void to hold items that would otherwise clutter the countertop.

The trays ship in stainless, white, and almond finishes, sized to standard sink-base panel widths of 28, 33, and 39 centimetres. A single-basin sink usually presents one wide false front; a double-basin arrangement often gives two narrower panels, doubling the mounting opportunities.

The hinge geometry that keeps the tray level

Two mounting styles exist, and the difference decides whether the panel can be removed later. The 6572 hinges attach to the cabinet stiles and let the whole front tilt out on a fixed arc of about 30 degrees. The tray itself screws to the back of the panel, so tray and panel move together as one unit while the hinges stay anchored to the cabinet frame. When the front tilts, the tray tips with it, which is why the tray depth stays shallow: anything deeper would spill as the panel rotates past 20 degrees.

Rev-A-Shelf also sells a hinge variant with a stop tab that arrests the swing before the panel contacts the countertop overhang. On sink bases where the front sits close to a stone worktop lip, that stop matters, because a 25 millimetre granite overhang leaves little clearance for an unrestricted swing. Measuring from the top edge of the false panel to the underside of the worktop before ordering prevents the hinge from cracking the panel against the stone on its first opening.

The fasteners supplied are 16 millimetre pan-head screws, sized for 19 millimetre cabinet stiles. Thicker face frames need longer screws, and a pilot hole of 2.5 millimetres stops the softwood from splitting near the stile edge.

Locating the panel clips first

Most false sink fronts are held by two metal clips, one behind each end of the panel, snapped onto the cabinet frame. Before any hinge goes in, those clips have to come off, and they release by pushing the panel up and pulling the bottom edge outward. Underneath, the clip footprint often overlaps exactly where the tip-out hinge wants to sit.

A worked measurement before drilling

Start with the panel off the cabinet and lying face-down on a bench. A 33 centimetre panel gives an internal mounting width of roughly 30 centimetres once the two hinge arms take their space at each end. The Rev-A-Shelf 6581 tray for that width measures 29.2 centimetres across the top lip, so it drops in with about 4 millimetres of play per side. That clearance is deliberate: it lets the tray sit square even when the cabinet opening is 2 or 3 millimetres out of parallel, which is common in framed cabinets built on site.

The hinge screw line sits 12 millimetres in from each vertical edge of the panel. Marking that line with a combination square, then transferring the same 12 millimetre offset to the cabinet stile, aligns the two halves of the hinge so the panel closes flush. If the panel closes proud at the top, the cabinet-side screws have been set too high by the same margin the gap shows, and backing them out to shift the hinge down 2 millimetres usually corrects it.

Tray height matters as much as width. The 6581 stands 63 millimetres tall, and the false front on a European frameless sink base is often only 90 to 110 millimetres of visible height. Subtracting the tray height from the panel height leaves the clearance for the hinge knuckle, and if that number falls below 20 millimetres the tray will foul the hinge as the panel returns to closed. In that case the shorter 6541 tray, at 48 millimetres tall, is the part that fits.

Where the tip-out sits among the other sink-base options

Sink cabinets attract more storage retrofits than any other run in a kitchen, because the plumbing forces everything to work around it. A tip-out tray takes the front panel. Behind it, on the cabinet floor, a two-tier pull-out on Blum Tandem runners can carry cleaning bottles clear of the trap, though the trap position dictates whether a full-width or notched basket is needed. Some installers combine both: the tip-out for small items reached constantly, and a rear pull-out for the bulk chemicals reached weekly.

Blum Aventos lift systems belong on the wall units above, not below, since they hinge upward and need headroom the sink base never has. Under a staircase or in an alcove, the same tip-out concept scales differently: there the dead zone is horizontal, not vertical, and shelving brackets or Rakks shelf mounting standards make better use of the space than a pivoting panel would. The tip-out earns its place specifically because the sink-front void is too shallow for a drawer and too shaped for a fixed shelf.

Concealed drawer runners solve a different problem again. They hide the slide mechanism under a drawer box so the visible face reads as a single clean panel, which is the opposite requirement from a sink front, where the panel already reads as a drawer and simply needs to move. Matching the retrofit to what the cavity actually allows keeps the sink base from becoming a collection of parts that fight each other for the same 15 centimetres.

Load limits and what cracks first

The polymer trays are rated for light items: sponges, a dish brush, a bar of soap, the sink stopper and strainer. Loading a tip-out with anything heavier stresses the panel-to-hinge screw joint, and that joint is the failure point long before the tray itself gives way. The 16 millimetre screws bite into the panel substrate, which on a mid-range cabinet is 15 millimetre melamine-faced particleboard. Repeated tilting with a heavy tray works those screws loose in the particleboard core, because the fibres crush rather than grip.

A fix that holds is a thread-locking insert or a wider washer under each screw head to spread the load across more of the panel face. On solid plywood panels the screws hold indefinitely, since plywood cross-plies resist the pull-out that crushes particleboard. Where the panel is a thin 6 millimetre skin over a hollow core, no screw will hold a hinge under repeated motion, and the honest answer is that such a panel needs a solid block glued behind it before the hinge goes on.

The hinges themselves, in the 6572 set, use a steel spring that returns the panel to closed. That spring is the second wear component, and after several years of daily use it can weaken enough that the panel no longer self-closes and hangs slightly open. Replacement hinge pairs are sold separately for exactly this reason, and swapping them reuses the existing tray and panel without touching the cabinet.

The question the specification sheets never answer is how a tip-out behaves on a sink base with a garbage disposal, where the extra plumbing mass pushes the trap forward into the very space the tray swing needs. That interference is measurable only with the disposal fitted, which is why the panel comes off and the swing gets tested empty before a single screw goes into the cabinet stile.
