“Barbie” Becomes the Highest-Grossing Film of 2023 in Less Than Two Months

It’s been less than two months since Barbie hit the theatres, but that didn’t stop it from becoming the highest-grossing film of 2023. Greta Gerwig’s acclaimed comedy passed The Super Mario Bros. Movie to set its latest box office milestone.

Barbie hit the theatres on July 21, and won over critics and moviegoers alike with the tale of our favorite childhood doll, embarking on a journey of self-discovery in the real world after experiencing an existential crisis. Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling received critical acclaim for their performances as Barbie and Ken and helped create a lot of buzz for this project.

Barbie knocked it out of the park as soon as it hit the theatres on July 21, despite facing tough competition in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and being banned and censored in several countries around the globe. It grossed a worldwide total of $356.3 million during its opening weekend and scored the largest domestic opening for a female-directed film.

Barbie also went on to become the highest-grossing film solely directed by a woman, and it set several major milestones for Warner Bros. After crossing the 1.365 billion mark last weekend, Barbie is now officially the highest-grossing film of 2023, breaking the record previously held by The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
