Silver Leaf Disease Stopped on a Victoria Plum with a Midsummer Cut Routine

Silver leaf on stone fruit enters through fresh pruning wounds when Chondrostereum purpureum spores are in the air, with October to April the danger stretch. On one Victoria plum, two lower limbs were checked over three July sessions using Felco No. 2 bypass secateurs and a folding pruning saw.

Chondrostereum purpureum enters fresh wood and then colonises the vascular tissue. That internal infection produces the silver sheen on affected leaves. The silvering cannot be wiped from the surface. It comes from a toxin released by the fungus, which separates the leaf epidermis from the layers underneath and makes light scatter. Once three or four leaves on a branch show that sheen, the wood behind them usually carries a brown stain several centimetres beyond the visible symptoms.

Spore release peaks in cool, damp conditions, roughly October through April across most temperate zones, and drops sharply once summer heat and dry air arrive. July cuts heal faster and meet a much lower load of airborne spores. On this Victoria plum, the first cut waited until the second week of July, with three dry days in the forecast.

Reading the branch before the saw touches it

Start at a silvered leaf and trace its branch back toward the trunk. The infection in the wood usually extends beyond the last leaf that shows silver.

A test slice with the Felco No. 2, taken an inch below the lowest silvered leaf, gives the first useful evidence. Healthy plum wood shows creamy white across the cut face. Infected wood shows a central brown or grey-brown stain, sometimes as a ring and sometimes as an irregular blot sitting off-centre.

Move the cut point back toward the trunk in single slices until two consecutive cuts show clean wood. That clean margin becomes the removal point. On the larger of the two affected limbs, the stain ran 34 cm past the last silvered leaf. The finished removal took a limb about the thickness of a broom handle, even though the silvered leaves made the problem look as if it might be limited to a pencil-width shoot.

The second limb presented a different choice. Silvering had reached only the tip, yet the stain began well down the shoot and tracked toward the union with a scaffold branch. Cutting all the way back to clean wood at that visit would have removed a structural limb, so the branch was marked and left for reassessment three weeks later, after watching whether the silvering advanced.

Why July came before September

Stone fruit summer pruning follows spore biology. September sits near the edge of the danger period as humidity rises and nights lengthen, while July gives high evapotranspiration, warm cambium, and active sap flow pressing outward against incoming spores.

A plum cut in July can show a callus rim within two to three weeks. The same wound made in March can remain open and wet for months.

Three visits, one infected tree

The work was split into three sessions about ten days apart. That spacing limited the amount of open wound area on a tree already under fungal pressure. Removing a large infected limb, a smaller infected limb, and then thinning the canopy in one afternoon would have made too many fresh entry points at once.

Session one removed the limb where the stain ran 34 cm beyond the silvered leaves. The Felco No. 2 handled stems up to about 20 mm. Past that, the folding pruning saw took over, followed by a clean secateur pass at the collar to leave a smooth face for callus formation.

The branch collar stayed intact. That swollen zone contains the sealing tissue the tree uses to close the wound. Flush cuts into the trunk were avoided, and stubs were not left proud of the collar.

Both blades were wiped and then dipped in surgical spirit between every cut, including successive cuts on the same limb. Silver leaf can move on contaminated tools as easily as it can move on wind. A blade that has just passed through stained wood can carry the fungus into the next healthy cut unless it is cleaned. The dip took about eight seconds each time and roughly doubled the length of the session.

Ten days later, session two returned to the second limb. The silvering had not advanced, and the tip stain had not extended toward the union. A lighter cut removed the affected 15 cm and left the scaffold branch in place. The bet was that an early tip infection, met by active summer sap flow, might be walled off by the tree itself. The second look made that conservative cut worth trying before sacrificing structure.

Session three dealt with healthy wood. The canopy was opened so air could move through the centre, reducing the damp, still conditions the fungus favours. This is the same principle used when reducing overgrown shrubs: thin so light and wind reach the interior. Shearing the outside into a dense shell traps humidity inside.

All removed wood was bagged and burned the same day. Infected prunings left in a heap can continue to produce bracket-shaped fungal bodies, which release another generation of spores. A tidy pile near the tree becomes a reinfection source.

Hedges, trained forms, and the same cut discipline

The clean-margin habit carries into hedge trimming and espalier work, even when silver leaf is not the pressure. In an overgrown hedge, cutting into old bare wood works on beech and hornbeam because they usually regenerate from that material. Many conifers lack dormant buds in brown wood, so the same cut can leave a permanent bare patch. That difference decides whether renovation can involve a hard reduction across two seasons or needs a slower reduction that keeps green growth on the plant.

Fruit-tree espaliers use the summer window for another purpose. On apples and pears, summer pruning of the current season’s growth checks vegetative vigour and encourages fruit spur formation. That is why formal restricted forms are pruned in late July and August, while winter work would push a different growth response.

The bypass action of the Felco matters on trained wood as well. A bypass blade slices past the stem cleanly. An anvil blade crushes tissue, and crushed tissue on a young trained branch heals more slowly and holds water.

Topiary shaping sits at the opposite end of the pruning spectrum. The aim there is dense surface twigging, so cuts are frequent and shallow, and the interior stays shaded and tight. That microclimate is exactly the condition avoided around a plum affected by silver leaf. A cut pattern that builds tight box topiary can create poor conditions for stone fruit.

Watching through the following season

The following spring, the plum leafed out with no silvering on any limb. Two callus rims had closed cleanly over the July wounds. The third wound, on the smaller cut, had sealed to about 70 percent.

That follow-up mattered because silver leaf can sit latent and reappear from wood that seemed clean at the time of cutting. The second limb, the one cut lightly in session two, held through one season and was marked for another slice test the following July before tools touched the rest of the tree.

It held through one season; the tension is still in the scaffold branch itself: will the stain stay at the cut tip, or will it resume its run toward the union?
