Up to 30% Less Watering from a Hozelock Self-Watering Kit on a 20-Pot Balcony Run
A 20-pot balcony fed by a Hozelock automatic watering kit can cut water use by up to 30% compared with rushed hand-watering. The saving comes from dawn timing, slow metering and drippers set where compost can absorb the flow before it escapes through terracotta.
Put the Drippers in the Right Place First
Much of the water lost on a balcony disappears during the first 20 seconds of hand-watering. A full can landing on dry John Innes often runs down the sides of the rootball before the peat and loam have time to wet through, then exits through the drainage holes.
A Hozelock drip kit changes that pattern by feeding water through pressure-compensating drippers at 2 to 4 litres per hour. On a 20-pot run, the usual layout is 13mm supply hose with 4mm micro-tubing spurs. Smaller pots take one adjustable dripper; pots above 30cm diameter need two so the rootball wets more evenly.
The water saving reported by users, up to 30%, comes from slow metering and less overshoot. When 20 containers are watered quickly by hand, a good third of the volume can run off the surface or pass straight out of the base. Set the drippers for 10 minutes twice daily in high summer and runoff drops sharply, because the emitter delivers water at a pace John Innes No 3 can absorb.
Placement counts. Put each dripper 3 to 4cm in from the pot rim, over the active root zone. Keep it away from the stem, where constant wetness encourages collar rot.
Why John Innes No 3 Suits Drip Irrigation
John Innes No 3 is loam-based, so it behaves differently under drip from many multipurpose peat-free composts used on balconies. Its mineral fraction holds water by capillary action and releases it slowly. After a short drip cycle, moisture can continue spreading laterally through the pot over the next hour.
Peat-free mixes can wet unevenly, and when they dry out they may become hydrophobic. In that state, a dripper can send a wet column straight down through the compost while the shoulders of the rootball stay bone dry.
For a permanent balcony display, especially a shrub or long-term container plant staying in the same pot for two or three seasons, the loam content earns its place. The Royal Horticultural Society specifies John Innes No 3 for established shrubs and long-term container subjects because it resists the slumping and compaction that can affect an all-organic mix after 18 months of watering.
Compaction causes trouble for drip irrigation. Once the surface caps over, water pools, travels sideways and spills off the top. At that point the 30% saving can disappear.
A workable mix for a drip-fed Mediterranean pot is 70% John Innes No 3 and 30% horticultural grit. The grit opens the structure enough to reduce the risk of a pressure-compensating dripper waterlogging the base.
That grit also adds ballast. On an exposed balcony, a 40cm pot with top-heavy planting is less likely to go over in a gust when the compost has extra mineral weight.
Repotting a Root-Bound Olive
An olive with roots spiralled into a tight mass will shed drip water instead of absorbing it. Tip the tree out of its pot and check the base: if the roots circle in a dense spiral, the container has kept the tree confined for too long.
Tease the outer roots loose with a hand fork. Cut through any thick girdling root with clean secateurs, then slice four vertical scores about 1cm deep down the sides of the rootball. Those cuts encourage new feeder roots to grow outward into fresh compost.
Move up one pot size only, such as from 30cm to 35cm diameter. An olive placed in a container much larger than its root system sits in cold, wet compost it cannot use, and a drip system keeps that unused volume damp between cycles.
Set the tree at the same depth as before. Backfill with the 70/30 John Innes and grit mix, then firm gently. Reposition the dripper after repotting, because fresh grit-heavy backfill drains faster than the old plug and may need the emitter slightly closer to the trunk for the first fortnight while new roots establish.
Agapanthus in Pots Through Winter
Agapanthus flowers better when slightly congested, which reduces the need for frequent repotting. The drawback is that a pot gives the roots less protection than open ground. Deciduous varieties such as the Headbourne Hybrids tolerate frost to around minus 10C once the top growth has died back, provided the crown does not sit in waterlogged compost through winter. Evergreen types are far more tender and need protection below minus 5C.
Shut off the drip system entirely from late October. Winter watering is the quickest route to losing potted agapanthus, because roots rot in cold, sodden loam before frost damages them. Drain the Hozelock supply hose or lag it, since water left in 13mm pipe can split the pipe when it freezes.
Move the pots against a house wall, ideally under a slight overhang that keeps the worst rain away, and group the containers so they insulate each other. Bubble wrap around the outside of the pot protects roots more usefully than fleece over the top, which mainly covers foliage the deciduous types have already shed.
Hold off feeding until growth restarts in spring. Then a high-potash tomato feed through the drip system’s diluter unit encourages flower spikes over leaf growth.
Gardenia Gets Its Own Water Rule
Gardenia is lime-hating. Tap water above pH 7 and a standard feed will yellow the leaves within weeks, so use an ericaceous feed and, where the mains supply is hard, collected rainwater through the drip reservoir.
The Numbers Behind a 20-Pot Kit
A Hozelock automatic watering kit for around 20 pots retails in the region of 60 to 90 pounds, depending on the pack. A battery-powered water timer adds roughly 30 to 45 pounds.
Take a mixed balcony run using about 40 litres a day across those pots at the height of summer under hand-watering. A 30% reduction saves 12 litres a day, close to 360 litres across a 30-day heatwave month.
On a metered supply, that volume is worth only pence. The practical gain is that drippers can run at dawn while the balcony is still in shade, cutting evaporative loss and reducing the stress caused by a missed midday watering. Over a two-week holiday, the same system also removes the neighbour-with-a-key problem that often decides whether a container display survives.
Pressure-compensating drippers block if the reservoir feeds them silt or algae, and one blocked emitter on a 20-pot manifold can kill one pot silently while the other 19 look fine. A 10-minute walk along the run every week or so, checking each dripper actually drips, is the maintenance the marketing usually leaves out. On a balcony manifold, a single dry rootball can stay hidden among healthy pots.
