The Felco 2 has been in production since the 1940s, and its blade is hardened carbon steel that takes an edge well but dulls after a season of cutting rose canes and apple whips. Six passes, one bevel, 23 degrees

The Felco 2 uses a single ground bevel on the cutting blade and a flat anvil-less counterblade, which is what a bypass design means in practice: the two edges slide past each other like scissors. Only the beveled blade gets filed. The factory bevel sits at roughly 23 degrees, and the goal is to match it, not to invent a steeper or shallower one. A DMT diamond file, the double-sided model with a coarse red side around 25 microns and a fine green side around 9 microns, does both jobs. Six passes means three or four strokes on the coarse side to raise a burr, then two or three on the fine side to knock it back and leave a working edge.

Hold the pruner in your off hand with the blade open and the bevel facing up toward you. Lay the file flat against the bevel so the whole ground surface makes contact, then lift the handle until you feel the file bite the steel rather than skate on the shoulder. Push the file from the pivot toward the tip in one motion, following the curve. That curve is the part most people fight, because the blade is not straight and a flat file wants to flatten it.

What the packaging leaves out

Felco sells its own tool, the Felco 903 sharpening stone, and the box tells you to sharpen at the factory angle without stating what that angle is. It is close to 23 degrees, confirmed by anyone who has laid an angle gauge on a fresh blade, but the instruction to match the original bevel is only useful if you can see the original bevel. On a worn blade the ground face has often been rounded off by previous careless filing, so there is no clean reference left.

The fix is to color the bevel with a marker and take one light coarse pass. Where the file removes ink, you are on the bevel. Where ink stays, your angle is off. Ink removed at the shoulder and not the edge means you are too shallow. Ink removed at the edge and not the shoulder means you are too steep. Adjust the handle height a few degrees and take another test pass until the ink lifts evenly across the whole ground face. Only then do the counting passes begin. This step costs thirty seconds and saves you from grinding a new, wrong bevel over the course of an afternoon.

The back of the blade

After the bevel raises a burr, that burr folds over to the flat back of the blade. Lay the fine green side of the DMT flat against the back, dead flat with no lift, and take one light pass from pivot to tip. This removes the burr without adding a second bevel. One pass. Adding a bevel to the back turns a bypass pruner into a blunt instrument that crushes stems instead of slicing them.

When the pivot matters more than the edge

A sharp blade on a loose Felco 2 still tears. The pivot bolt on this model is adjustable, and the tool that adjusts it, the small Felco key or a 10 mm and 12 mm spanner pair on older units, is the difference between a pruner that cuts and one that chews. If the two blades have visible daylight between them when closed, the bolt is too loose and no amount of filing recovers a clean cut. Tighten the pivot nut a quarter turn at a time and test on a green stem between each adjustment. The blades should close with the counterblade wiping firmly against the cutting blade along the entire length, not just at the tip.

The reason this comes before more sharpening is mechanical. A bypass cut works because the two edges maintain contact under lateral pressure as they pass. Slack in the pivot lets the cutting blade drift away from the counterblade, opening a gap that a stem slips into and folds rather than parts. People replace blades that were never dull. Felco sells the replacement cutting blade as part 2/3 and the spring as 2/91, and a fair number of those blade sales are really pivot problems that a quarter turn would have solved.

There is also the sap and dried plant residue that builds up on the pivot and the blade faces over a season. This gums the action and holds moisture against the carbon steel, which then pits. A rag with a little light oil, or the eraser-style rust block sold for hand tools, clears it. Do this before you file, because filing over a crust of dried sap loads the diamonds with debris and dulls the file faster than the steel does. A DMT file cleaned under running water with an old toothbrush lasts years. One buried in sap and left in a damp shed does not.

Check the spring while the tool is open. The 2/91 coil spring loses tension and eventually snaps at the loop. A pruner that does not spring back open on its own is running on a tired spring, and the replacement is a two-minute job once the pivot is apart. Since the pivot is already loosened for adjustment, this is the moment to look.

A worked example on a year-old blade

Take a Felco 2 that cut through one growing season of fruit tree work, dormant pruning in late winter, summer thinning, and some tomato stems. The edge reflects light along a thin line when you tilt it under a bulb, which is the sign of a rounded, dulled edge. A truly sharp edge reflects nothing because there is no flat facet to catch the light.

Mark the bevel, take a test pass, adjust to match. Then three passes on the DMT coarse red side, moderate pressure, pivot to tip, following the curve. Feel the back of the blade with a thumbnail drawn off the edge: a burr catches the nail along the whole length. That burr confirms the coarse side reached the very edge. Now two passes on the fine green side at the same angle, lighter pressure, to refine the scratches the coarse side left. One flat pass on the back to remove the burr. Six passes total, plus the marker test. The edge should now shave a curl off a fingernail or slice printer paper without tearing. Total time, under five minutes once the pivot and residue are handled.

Angle drift over repeated sharpenings

Each freehand sharpening tends to steepen the bevel by a degree or two, because the natural motion lifts the handle slightly. Over four or five seasons a 23-degree bevel creeps toward 28 or 30, and the edge gets more durable but less keen, which shows up as more force needed on green wood. The correction is a rebevel, spending ten or fifteen coarse passes to re-establish the lower angle across the full ground face, then finishing normally. This is worth doing once every few years rather than every sharpening, because it removes more steel and shortens blade life if done constantly.

The carbon steel Felco uses, unlike the stainless blades on some competitors, will rust if you rebevel and then leave the fresh bright steel exposed to damp air. A wipe of oil after any sharpening session closes that window. This is also why the marker test pays off: if you can hold the original angle within a degree, you rarely need a full rebevel at all, and you remove far less steel over the tool’s life.

The open question is how many rebevels a single Felco 2 blade tolerates before the ground face runs out of metal and the cutting edge sits too far back to meet the counterblade cleanly. Nobody sells that number, and the honest answer depends entirely on how heavy-handed each previous sharpening was.
