The 6 mm gap and where it comes from

Hold the HP-VS8Z closed against a light source and a 6 mm crescent of daylight shows between the blade and the anvil-side hook near the tip. That gap is why 8 mm rose canes fold instead of severing. ARS lists the VS8Z with a hard chrome blade rated to roughly 25 mm cutting capacity, so a stem well under that diameter should part in one pass. When it does not, the fault sits at the blade tip, where the cutting arc loses contact first.

The common assumption is a sprung or bent hook. On the VS8Z that is rare. The hook is a thick forged piece and survives drops that dent softer secateurs. What actually drifts is the blade bevel. Repeated freehand touch-ups round the tip more than the heel, because the wrist naturally lifts at the end of each stroke. Over a season the tip bevel opens past the original 25 degrees, the edge retreats, and the blade no longer sweeps tight against the hook through the last 6 mm of travel. Fixing the hook does nothing. The bevel has to come back to a single consistent angle across the whole curve.

Reading the gap before you touch steel

Measurement first. Close the shears, clamp a feeler gauge stack at the tip, and note where contact resumes moving toward the pivot. On the pair described here contact was clean from the heel to about two-thirds along the blade, then opened to 6 mm at the extreme tip. That pattern confirms tip wear, not a pivot problem. A pivot fault produces an even gap along the entire length instead.

Check the pivot bolt tension separately. ARS uses a nut-and-bolt pivot on the VS8Z that loosens with use. A blade that rocks sideways under thumb pressure will never register a true gap reading, because the wobble masks the geometry. Tighten the pivot until the blade swings under its own weight from horizontal but stops halfway, then re-measure. If the 6 mm gap persists after the pivot is snug, the bevel is the culprit and the jig comes out. If tightening the pivot alone closes the gap, stop there and do not grind anything.

The jig setup at 25 degrees

A fixed-angle honing jig, the kind sold for chisels and plane irons, holds the blade at a repeatable angle against the stone. The VS8Z blade unbolts from the handle in under a minute once the pivot nut is off, which matters because the curved blade will not sit flat in a jig while still attached to the grip.

Clamp the free blade in the jig with the bevel face presented to the stone. Set the jig to 25 degrees, the ARS factory grind for this line. A digital angle cube laid on the jig body reads the setting directly and removes the guesswork that ruins freehand work. Use a 1000 grit waterstone for the bulk pass and a 3000 grit for the finish. Coarser than 1000 removes too much steel from a chrome-plated blade and cuts through the plating on the flat side.

The blade is curved, so the jig cannot ride in a straight line. Work in short arcs, moving the jig laterally across the stone while following the blade curve, keeping the bevel flat against the abrasive. Six to eight passes per zone on the 1000 grit brought the tip bevel back to a crisp single facet on the test pair. Watch the reflection on the bevel. A consistent unbroken line of light means the angle is holding. A double line means the jig shifted and the pass is uneven.

The flat back side of an ARS blade is chrome plated and does not get a bevel. Lay it flat on the 3000 grit and take two light passes only, enough to lift the burr raised by the bevel work. Grinding a back bevel here would open a new gap against the hook and undo the whole exercise.

After the bevel is restored, reassemble and re-measure. The 6 mm gap on the test pair closed to under 0.5 mm, well inside cutting tolerance, after a single jig session.

When the plating is already gone

One pass too coarse and the chrome at the tip flakes. Bare steel underneath rusts within days in humid storage. There is no field fix for lost plating short of a replacement blade.

Comparing the fix to a blade swap

The Felco blade replacement kit is the reference point most gardeners reach for, because Felco built its reputation on parts availability. ARS sells replacement blades for the VS series too, though distribution outside Japan is thinner and lead times run longer. A replacement VS8Z blade lands in the same price band as the jig plus a two-stone set. That is the real decision. Buy the blade once and you have swapped the problem, not learned the repair. Buy the jig and stones and every future edge on the VS8Z, and on other bevel-edge tools, comes back at home.

The jig route has a ceiling. Chrome plating is finite. Each restoration removes a sliver of edge steel, and after enough sessions the plating thins at the tip regardless of technique. On a blade sharpened twice a season, that ceiling sits years out. On a blade abused with coarse stones or an angle grinder, the plating can vanish in one bad afternoon. The swap makes sense when the plating is compromised or the steel behind the edge has chipped past what a stone can chase. Until then the geometry is recoverable, and a recovered geometry cuts identically to a new blade because the operative surface is the freshly honed bevel either way.

Stainless models complicate the math. A stainless border fork or a stainless-bodied tool tolerates neglect that would rust a plated secateur blade, which is why some gardeners assume all stainless tools are maintenance-free. The VS8Z blade is not stainless. It is carbon steel under hard chrome, and once that chrome breaks the maintenance clock starts running fast.

Storage after the edge is back

A freshly honed VS8Z edge dulls fastest from moisture, not use. Wipe the blade dry, run a drop of camellia oil along the bevel, and close the shears before storing. Sap left on the blade holds water against the steel and etches the edge overnight. The lock on the VS8Z holds the blade closed against the hook, which protects the tip that just took the most metal during honing.

The question the jig session leaves open is how many restorations this particular blade has left before the tip plating gives out, and there is no gauge that reads that number directly. Only the next gap measurement, a season from now, will show whether the bevel held or the chrome finally thinned through.
