DeWalt DCM563 vs Bosch AHS 50-20 LI for Trimming a 25-Metre Privet Line
A 25-metre privet run at chest height means about 12 to 15 minutes of continuous cutting for each pass, and the hedge usually needs two or three passes a year. The DeWalt DCM563 and Bosch AHS 50-20 LI differ on blade length, stroke rate, weight, and battery platform.
The Bosch AHS 50-20 LI uses a 500 mm blade with a 20 mm tooth gap. The DeWalt DCM563 uses a 550 mm blade with a 19 mm gap. On a straight privet line, the extra 50 mm of DeWalt blade length matters less than tooth spacing, because annual privet growth rarely produces stems above 12 mm. Both machines handle that thickness without stalling.
Bosch quotes 2,600 strokes per minute for the AHS 50-20 LI, while DeWalt lists 2,800 spm for the DCM563. Faster reciprocation helps clear soft summer regrowth in fewer passes, which is the main cutting load on a 25-metre hedge.
The DCM563 bare tool sits around 3.2 kg before a battery is fitted. Add a 4.0 Ah DeWalt 18V pack and the weight climbs past 3.8 kg. The AHS 50-20 LI is sold as a fixed-battery unit at roughly 2.5 kg total. During a 12-minute cut, that 1.3 kg difference shows up in the forearms before either blade starts to feel slow.
Battery Packs and Charge Times
The DCM563 runs on DeWalt’s 18V XR system. If a drill, impact driver, or DCM565 chainsaw is already in the shed on that platform, the trimmer can use packs that are already owned and charged. A single 5.0 Ah XR battery clears the full 25-metre privet line twice in one session, with enough margin left for the top edge.
The Bosch AHS 50-20 LI sits in Bosch’s Power for All 18V green range, the DIY line, and it is separate from the blue Professional platform. Its supplied 2.5 Ah pack is enough for one 25-metre run at chest height. A second dense pass through thick August regrowth can drain the pack before the far end. Households that already use Bosch green cordless mowers or the ART grass trimmer can share the pack, which makes the Bosch setup more convenient for those owners.
Charging changes the rhythm of an afternoon job. A depleted 2.5 Ah Bosch green pack takes around 60 minutes on the standard AL 1830 CV charger. A 5.0 Ah XR pack on the DeWalt DCB115 reaches usable charge inside 45 minutes and full charge inside 90. On a single-hedge job, the DeWalt platform is unlikely to force a pause for charging.
Buying into a battery system also affects the next mower, chainsaw, and blower. If the privet later becomes box, yew, or part of a mixed windbreak, a 500 mm DIY hedge trimmer may be the limiting tool for shaping the heavier material.
Cutting the Long Straight Run
A 25-metre privet line is usually cut across three planes: two vertical faces and the top. Work the faces first, moving from bottom to top, with the blade held about 10 degrees off vertical. That angle lets cuttings fall away from the teeth instead of riding back into the blade.
Both machines shed soft privet debris well. The DeWalt’s dual-action blade throws less material back toward the operator because the opposing teeth cancel some vibration and hold the offcut on the outfeed side.

A taut string line pinned at both ends of the 25 metres gives the top a reference that the eye cannot match over that distance. Cut in one direction along the string, then walk back and remove the ragged stems still standing. Cutting back and forth in one pass leaves a scalloped top on any run longer than about 8 metres.
On vertical faces, hold the blade tip slightly lower than the handle. Gravity then helps feed the machine down the face. Pushing the blade into the hedge bends soft privet stems aside, which leaves them standing instead of cutting them cleanly.
Gate posts and tight corners still call for hand tools. A pair of Fiskars PowerGear X hand pruners can finish stems a 500 mm blade cannot reach without gouging nearby growth. The bypass action leaves a cleaner cut than the crush mark from a trimmer tooth on a thick stem.
Blade Hygiene Before Box

Wipe the blade with a disinfectant such as Jeyes Fluid diluted per label between the privet run and any buxus work. Cut box last in the session so contaminated tools do not touch it first.
Runtime on the 25-Metre Line
For one summer pass, the surface area is straightforward. The hedge has two vertical faces at 1.8 m tall, which gives 90 square metres of face. Add a top strip about 0.5 m wide over 25 metres, another 12.5 square metres. The full cutting surface is roughly 102 square metres.
Soft privet regrowth at 2,800 spm on the DCM563 clears about 8 to 10 square metres per minute when the blade is fed at a steady walking pace. That puts the complete line at 11 to 13 minutes of trigger time. A 5.0 Ah XR pack delivers roughly 45 to 55 minutes of continuous privet cutting from full, so one pass uses well under half a charge.
The Bosch AHS 50-20 LI at 2,600 spm covers similar ground, although a little more slowly per square metre. The same hedge takes about 13 to 15 minutes of trigger time. Its 2.5 Ah pack gives around 20 to 25 minutes of continuous privet work, so one pass fits inside the pack. Heavy August regrowth makes a second pass tight unless a spare pack is ready. That spare removes the working ceiling for around thirty-five pounds.
Noise, Vibration, and Thick Stems
Both machines are quieter than any petrol trimmer. At the operator’s ear they sit in the low-to-mid 80s dB(A), which keeps a 15-minute session within the range where ear defenders are optional, though still sensible near a boundary shared with neighbours.
Vibration decides comfort across a full hedge. The DeWalt’s dual-reciprocating blade cancels part of the stroke energy that single-action mechanisms pass into the grip.
On the top plane, the DCM563’s extra weight is noticed first. The machine remains composed in the cut, yet overhead work with more than 3.8 kg becomes tiring before vibration becomes the main complaint.
The Bosch feels easier to hold high and level. On clean annual privet it stays comfortable because stems above about 14 mm are uncommon. When the blade hits material thicker than that, the lighter body passes more of the impact into the hands because there is less mass to absorb it.
A neglected hedge with two years of growth changes the feel of both machines. The DeWalt keeps its composure through the thicker stems that make the Bosch fight harder in the hand.
