6 Signs of Vine Weevil Grubs in Heuchera Pots Treated with Nemasys Nematodes
A 3 litre Heuchera pot can look sound while Otiorhynchus sulcatus larvae have already cut the crown from its roots. Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer, BASF’s Steinernema kraussei suspension, works only while compost sits within 5C to 20C, so the signs below help separate a working drench from a failed one.
Pull the crown before waiting for wilt
Grip the Heuchera crown between finger and thumb and lift with no more force than you would use to pick up a teacup. A sound plant holds in the John Innes No 2 compost. A plant carrying Otiorhynchus sulcatus larvae comes away cleanly, with the root system missing and a ragged stub where the fibrous roots once joined the crown.
That loose-crown test gives an earlier reading than wilt. The leaves can draw on stored moisture for several days, so the top growth may still look passable after the roots have been severed below the compost surface.
The grubs start at the root collar, where the vascular tissue is narrow and easy to cut. In a 3 litre pot they tend to sit in the lower two thirds of the rootball, the part that stays moist longest. If the exposed stub is clean and pale, feeding damage is the likely cause; brown, rotted tissue points to fungal collapse such as Phytophthora, where Nemasys will not help.
Count grubs against the pack rate
BASF packages Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer at 50 million Steinernema kraussei for 12 square metres, which works out at roughly 500,000 nematodes per litre of drenching solution. The instruction assumes active larvae are sitting in the top 20 cm of compost when the pot is drenched.
Tip a treated pot onto newspaper fourteen days after application and look through the rootball. Final-instar vine weevil larvae are white, legless, C-shaped, and 8 to 10 mm long, with a pale brown head capsule.
Dead larvae after a successful drench usually look limp and discoloured, often ochre or brown. The nematode kills by releasing Xenorhabdus bacteria into the grub’s haemocoel. Pale grubs that still flex at day fourteen point to a practical failure: the compost was below 5C at application, the pot dried before the nematodes reached the larvae, or the product had gone past its use-by date. The suspension keeps viable for about two weeks in a refrigerator at 5C and loses viability quickly at room temperature. A dead-to-live count is the direct check on whether the biocontrol reached the larvae.
Leaf notches come from adults
Adult vine weevils feed at night between May and September, cutting semicircular notches 3 to 5 mm across from leaf edges. On Heuchera, the outer leaves usually show the first marks.
Those notches mean breeding adults are present and eggs are being laid into the compost surface. Nemasys targets larvae only, so new leaf damage after a drench does not prove the treatment below has failed.
Frass, loose compost, and a raised crown
Run a fingertip through the top 2 cm of compost around a suspect pot. Larval feeding leaves fine brown frass and loosens compost around the crown. Instead of holding together as a mat, the surface crust breaks away in flakes.
Terracotta pots show the effect more clearly than plastic pots. Porous clay pulls moisture from the compost edge, and the dried frass looks paler against the darker wet core.
A second surface clue is a crown sitting proud of the compost line. Once the roots are eaten, the plant loses its anchor and the crown may rise 5 to 10 mm from its original level, sometimes with a tilt.
In overwintered containers, that raised crown is often blamed on frost heave. After a freeze and thaw, frost movement affects the rootball as a whole and the level settles back. With larval feeding, the crown alone looks lifted while the surrounding compost sits much as it did before.
That difference matters for fuchsia and Heuchera left outside over winter. A crown loosened by larvae in October will be a dead plant by March, even when fleece has protected the top growth from frost.
Self-watering containers shift the place to inspect. In a Hozelock or comparable pot with a 2 litre base reservoir, the wicking capillary keeps the middle of the compost column damp. Grubs move up toward the aerated surface layer, so the frass can appear higher than it would in a free-draining terracotta pot. The drench has to wet the same zone where the larvae are feeding.
Wet compost on a fixed drip line
A Heuchera with larvae cutting through its roots stops using water at its former rate. If the same pot on a Hozelock drip irrigation kit was taking 200 ml per day in July and the compost now stays saturated between cycles without a change in weather, the root mass drawing that water has been reduced.
Overwet compost around a plant on a fixed drip schedule invites the assumption that the emitter is over-delivering. Cutting the drip rate leaves the cause untouched. On a kit set to 2 minutes twice daily through a 2 litre-per-hour emitter, roughly 133 ml reaches the pot per cycle. A plant that once cleared that water between cycles and now leaves moisture standing at the drainage holes has lost functional root volume. Lift the pot after a dry morning: a healthy 3 litre pot in active growth feels noticeably lighter than one with a dead root system holding water it cannot use.
Compost temperature sets the second drench
Steinernema kraussei, the cold-tolerant species BASF supplies in the autumn Nemasys formulation, stays active down to 5C. That extends the treatment window into October and again in early spring. The warm-active Heterorhabditis species sold for summer stops working below about 12C, and using the seasonal type at the wrong temperature is a common reason for finding live grubs at day fourteen.
Use a probe thermometer at 5 cm deep in the compost before drenching. Air temperature gives a poor guide: a sunny March afternoon can show 14C in the air while a shaded terracotta pot sits at 7C.
Water the compost first so it is moist without being waterlogged. Apply the nematode suspension through a coarse rose, or through the supplied applicator with the filter removed, then water lightly again to wash the nematodes down into the compost. Keep the pot damp for the next fortnight, since the nematodes move through the water film between compost particles and die if the pot dries out.
If the September count shows many live grubs and compost temperature remains above 5C into October, a second autumn drench catches larvae before they reach the final instar, when the worst root damage is done. Late eggs may still hatch after an October treatment, leaving first-instar grubs too small to feel in a tipped-out pot. The unresolved part sits below the compost surface, where the newest larvae leave too little damage to announce themselves.
