220 Bulbs Planted in an Afternoon by a Kent and Stowe Bulb Planter on a Clay Border

A 14-metre clay border took 220 daffodil, tulip and allium bulbs in one afternoon with the Kent and Stowe long-handled bulb planter. The tool cut the labour down to a standing job, while the soil made every clean plug a drainage problem.

Clay is unforgiving when a planting hole is punched fast. The Kent and Stowe long-handled bulb planter used here was the carbon-steel model with the FSC ash shaft, driven under boot pressure. It pulled a tapered core roughly 12 to 15 cm deep from a border that had been wet since October, and each core lifted as a single greasy cylinder.

That clean cylinder is why the job moved quickly. It is also why the bulbs needed extra attention before they went in. A smooth-walled hole in heavy clay glazes as the corer turns and lifts. Water then gathers at the bottom, exactly where the basal plate sits. A Narcissus that should settle and naturalise can rot in that sealed cup.

The number came from a real afternoon: 220 bulbs along a 14-metre strip, made up of two daffodil varieties, a run of Tulipa Ballerina, and a scattering of Allium sphaerocephalon. Doing the same work on knees with a trowel would have filled most of a weekend and probably required ibuprofen afterwards. The long-handled planter made the pace plausible because the operator stayed standing and the plug came out in one lift.

The hole wall mattered more than the depth mark

Most bulb instructions repeat the familiar depth rule: set bulbs at two to three times their own height. For a large King Alfred daffodil, that puts the base at about 15 cm. The Kent and Stowe barrel has stamped graduations, so the operator can read the depth as the tool goes in.

Depth, though, was only the visible part of the job. When the planter withdrew from wet clay, the wall it left behind looked almost trowelled under a hand lens. That polished skin slowed water movement both into and out of the surrounding ground. Rain hitting the border could follow the softer replaced plug downwards and finish in the cup around the bulb.

Before each bulb went in, the base of the hole received a handful of horticultural grit. The useful grade was the washed 4 to 6 mm material commonly sold in 20 kg bags. It loosened the base of the cup and gave the first roots a sharper, airier contact than saturated clay.

Across 220 holes, the grit added about forty minutes and one extra walk to the car for a second bag. That time was easy to justify. Skipping the grit is the most common reason clay-planted daffodils come up blind in their second year, assuming they return at all.

The plug still went back over the bulb, firmed enough to close the hole and stop it drying hollow. The aim was a bulb sitting at the right depth with a gritty base below it, then the native soil returned above. On this border, the difference between a quick planted hole and a prepared one was a handful of mineral material.

Timing kept to one afternoon

Daffodils prefer late September or early October planting while the soil still carries warmth for root growth. Tulips can wait until November, after colder ground has reduced the fungal spores that cause tulip fire.

Planting daffodils and tulips together on the same afternoon served the available time more than the ideal calendar for each bulb.

Compost went on after the bulbs

Grit improved each planting pocket. The rest of the border still behaved like heavy clay: hard as brick in August and boggy in February. Compost was the longer correction.

Digging bulky organic matter down into a heavy profile can create soft pockets that hold water and slump. On this sort of border, the better work comes from a surface mulch. A 5 to 7 cm layer of well-rotted garden compost or spent mushroom compost can sit on top through winter while worms pull it into the soil.

Lumbricus terrestris, the deep-burrowing earthworm, does that incorporation steadily and leaves vertical channels through the clay. Those channels move air and water better than a forked trench that collapses after wet weather. A hot compost heap that has gone through a proper thermophilic phase, staying above 55C for several days, will also have cooked out most weed seed and the persistent perennial roots that otherwise arrive with homemade compost.

The sequence mattered. If a thick mulch went down first, the bulb planter clogged with compost before reaching clean soil. The stamped graduations also read from the mulch surface, which made the hole in mineral soil shallower than the number on the barrel suggested.

So the bulbs went in first, then the compost followed over the top. The fresh mulch had one extra use during the work: it showed which part of the strip had already been planted, reducing the chance that the next row would land on the previous row.

The volume was larger than it looked on paper. A border 14 metres long, half a metre wide and mulched 6 cm deep needs about 0.4 cubic metres of compost. A domestic dalek-style bin might produce around 200 litres of usable compost in a year. One bin will fall short for a single border at that depth, which is why serious clay gardeners either run three bins in rotation or buy compost in bulk.

Copper tape stayed with the pots

Slugs deserved a mention because emerging tulip and daffodil foliage in spring is a real target, especially the fat noses of Tulipa pushing through cold, wet clay. Copper tape has a following for good reason in containers. Wrapped around a pot rim, the adhesive-backed strip gives a mild galvanic response when slug slime bridges the copper, and molluscs do turn back. Around a hosta pot, it can earn its keep.

An open border gives the tape no clean rim to guard. Laid flat on soil, it simply becomes one more strip a slug can move around, and the copper oxidises to dull brown within weeks, taking the effect with it. For this planted strip, the practical choices were nematodes, Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita, watered on when the soil reaches 5C, or a more tolerant wildlife approach helped by leaving some fallen leaves for ground beetles. The tape stayed set aside for the pot-grown salvias.

The bulbs kept back for terracotta

A dozen bulbs were held back for 3-litre terracotta pots on the doorstep. In pots, the compost choice changed. John Innes No 3 is the loam-based mix with the highest nutrient charge in the John Innes range, and its weight helps containers carrying tall tulips. The sterilised loam holds water and feed through a season without collapsing in the way a peat-free multipurpose mix can.

Pure John Innes No 3 was too rich for dormant bulbs heading into a wet winter. A workable mix was roughly two parts John Innes No 3 to one part horticultural grit, using the same grit already opened for the border. That kept the loam and feed reserve for spring growth while giving the pot enough drainage.

Each pot had crocks over the drainage hole, compost filled to within 4 cm of the rim, and bulbs spaced about a bulb-width apart. A grit dressing on top helped stop the loam surface from capping. Terracotta breathes and dries faster than plastic, which is useful through a wet British winter.

By the end of the afternoon, the border looked plain: compost levelled, holes hidden, no visible sign of 220 bulbs beneath it. The only clue was the gritty spoil caught on the boot soles and a shorter stack of 20 kg bags by the car. The blind shoot beside a flowering clump remains the part the afternoon exposed without explaining.
