As a burgeoning pop star, you’d probably want to be visible to your fans on social media. These days, staying relevant is the name of the game, and you’d need to play it to win it. So, when news of a secret Instagram account of Lorde’s broke out, entertainment news outlets went ballistic.
The account has the handle, @onionringsworldwide. The posts described and rated onion rings. They even got into the nitty-gritty details of it too. They described the crumb flavoring and got down to even the mouth feel of each ring.
Internet sleuths argued that wherever Lorde went, the @onionringsworldwide seemed to follow. So, if Lorde has a concert in Tennesee, the Instagram account would soon post a review about an onion ring from Tennessee. And of the account’s 24 followers, Lorde’s own public Instagram account is one of them. The others were either friends or family members of hers.
However, when the news broke, the account was quickly deactivated. Luckily, some news agencies had already taken screenshots of the account.
She did, later on, admit that it really was her behind the account, she just didn’t want the rest of the world to know. “I feel like it reads like the kind of thing a pop star would do to look relatable, which I wasn’t doing,” she confesses to Jimmy Fallon in an interview. It’s also something that she’d like to enjoy for herself. She says she doesn’t want her celebrity to make onion ring joints send her free stuff just so it would get featured on her social media accounts.
But, now that she’s revealed it, this might just happen for Lorde. But if onion ring producers really do send her their products, she promised to remain fair to her sensibilities as an onion ring connoisseur.
