Miley Cyrus’ long on-off relationship with Liam Hemsworth has been a constant source of fascination for pop culture vultures, and it has also been a source of inspiration for Miley herself. In fact, much of her music has emerged from their relationship. Let’s take a look at a few of her songs that were inspired by Liam.
Wrecking Ball
Miley and Liam’s relationship has definitely had some intense moments, and in 2014 when they called off their engagement, Miley’s emotions were definitely heated. She performed the song at a concert and ranted, “And every time you get in your car, you’re going to hear my f***ing song on the f***ing radio, you piece of s**t. Enjoy hearing this song for the rest of your life.” It would not be vain for Liam to think this song was about him.
Malibu
Miley confirmed this song was about Liam, saying that she wanted to clear the air rather than let people speculate. “They’re going to talk about me if I come out of a restaurant with Liam. So why not put the power back in my relationship and say, ‘This is how I feel?'” she said.
Drive
Miley admitted that she wrote this on Valentine’s Day and was experiencing a lot of emotions about it, as her and Liam were going through a rough patch. She said the song “is about needing to leave someone but not really wanting to completely cut yourself off from the relationship. It’s a time when you want to leave but you can’t. It’s also about moving on.”
Slide Away
This song came shortly after their breakup in August 2019, and it definitely mourns the end of their relationship. With lines such as “Move on, we’re not 17 / I’m not who I used to be,” we get a sense of a relationship that has spanned her adult life, and it could not be about anyone else.
