Plant a Bare-Root Carpinus Betulus Whip Line in a 30-Centimetre Trench with Rootgrow

Plant a Bare-Root Carpinus Betulus Whip Line in a 30-Centimetre Trench with Rootgrow

Bare-root Carpinus betulus whips, commonly sold in 60-90cm and 90-120cm grades, arrive with the soil removed from the roots. They remain viable only during full dormancy, which in most temperate regions runs from leaf-fall in November to bud-swell in late March. A continuous 30cm trench gives each plant the same prepared rooting zone along the run, and a taut line lets you sight the whips so the mature hedge face stays straight.

Cutting the trench to the right profile

Mark the hedge run with two canes and a builder’s line pulled tight at soil level. Dig a trench 30cm deep and 30cm wide, setting the spoil on a board or sheet so the same soil can go back around the roots. For whips whose spread root systems sit around 15-25cm below the collar, the extra depth gives room to work, not planting depth.

Fork over the base of the trench by a further 10-15cm after the spade work is finished. That break in the lower layer matters because Carpinus betulus roots can stall at compacted subsoil. Where that happens, the hedge may break and extend unevenly, with one section moving ahead of the next even though all the whips came from the same batch.

Set each whip at the depth it held in the nursery row. The old ground line usually shows as a soil stain on the stem, and matching that mark keeps the collar in the right position. Planting too deep encourages collar rot, while planting too shallow leaves the upper roots close to a drying surface.

On free-draining loam, return the trench soil as it came out. On heavier clay, mix 20-30 percent horticultural grit through the backfill so the trench does not sit wet around the roots during winter. Firm in stages with your heel as the soil goes back, because loose backfill leaves air pockets around parts of the root system and those exposed sections can desiccate.

Spacing for a solid face

For a stock-proof or screening hedge, use five plants per metre in a single staggered row, or three per metre in a double row with 30-40cm between the rows. A lighter garden divider can be planted as a single row at three per metre. If spacing opens beyond that, the base remains gappy for years because hornbeam puts on height faster than it fills sideways.

What Rootgrow does at the root

Rootgrow is a granular inoculant containing spores of several mycorrhizal fungi, sold in the UK under an RHS-endorsed label. The fungi colonise living root tissue and grow a hyphal network into the surrounding soil. That network effectively increases the volume of soil from which the plant can draw phosphorus and water.

Contact is the critical detail. Granules lying loose in the trench away from the roots use up product with little effect, because colonisation starts where the inoculant touches the living root surface.

For bare-root hornbeam, put about the recommended pinch in the trench under each plant position, around 5-10g per whip at these grades. Lower the roots onto the granules and firm the soil so the exposed root surface presses against them. Bare-root stock gives the spores immediate access because there is no potting compost between the inoculant and the root.

Keep soluble high-phosphate feed out of the planting operation. Readily available phosphorus suppresses the plant’s need to form the fungal association, so any phosphate feed should wait until after the first season.

Visible effects above ground develop slowly. The first summer may show little difference, even where contact was good. The return usually appears in the second and third years, as the fungal network matures and the hedge can draw on a larger soil volume during dry spells.

That timing is why Rootgrow belongs in the trench at planting. As a later top-dressing on an established line, it has little value because the granules no longer reach the active root surfaces in the same direct way. On ground that has recently carried a mycorrhizal-hosting crop, the native fungal population may already be adequate. On sterilised or heavily cultivated ground it may be depleted, and bare-root planting into former arable land or lawn edges is the situation where the inoculant most clearly earns its place.

Watering and the first-summer risk window

Winter and early-spring planting lets the whips sit dormant through the wettest months, so watering is rarely needed until leaf-out. The risky period comes with the first dry spell after bud-break, usually from May into July, when a newly leafed whip transpires faster than its unsettled roots can supply water.

A leaky-hose line laid along the base of the trench and covered by mulch puts water into the root zone without wetting the foliage. During a genuine dry spell, 10-15 litres per metre per week keeps the line from checking.

Mulch carries as much weight as irrigation in the first summer. Spread 5-7cm of composted bark or leaf mould over the trench, keeping it a couple of centimetres clear of the stems. The mulch holds soil moisture and suppresses grass and weeds, which otherwise take water from the top 20cm where the young hornbeam roots are working. Grass right up to a new hornbeam line is one of the commonest causes of first-year failure and can do more damage than drought alone.

Formative cutting versus leaving it alone

Hornbeam responds well to a hard formative cut. Reducing whips by roughly a third after planting, or in the first winter, forces low branching and thickens the base, producing a hedge dense to the ground.

That cut can feel severe when the plants are still thin, especially when the aim is height. A whip left untouched tends to put its energy upward, and the lower structure can stay thin for years.

Once the line is established, hornbeam usually needs a single late-summer trim, around August. Cut then, it holds its dead russet leaves through winter. The cordless hedge trimmers sold for laurel and privet handle hornbeam without difficulty, though a mature Carpinus face has dense twiggy growth that loads the blade more heavily than soft laurel shoots and drains a battery faster. A 50-60cm blade suits a hedge you can reach from the ground. Anything taller moves the job onto a platform.

A worked example for a 12-metre run

A 12m single staggered row at five plants per metre needs 60 whips of the 60-90cm grade. The trench is 12m long, 30cm wide and 30cm deep, with the base forked a further 12-15cm. At roughly 7g of Rootgrow per whip, the line takes about 420g, so a 360g tub covers most of the run and a second small tub finishes it.

On clay, allow four to five barrow-loads of horticultural grit for a 20-25 percent mix through the backfill. A 6cm mulch layer over a 30cm-wide strip along the same run uses roughly 0.2 cubic metres of composted bark. During a dry July, watering at 12 litres per metre per week comes to about 145 litres across the run each time.

The main purchase costs sit with the whips and the grit. Most of the labour sits in opening the trench and mixing grit through heavy soil, while planting 60 dormant whips into an open trench takes under an hour once the trench is ready.
