Fit a Richelieu Pull-Out Pantry into a 300-Millimetre Cabinet Gap in 6 Steps
A 300-millimetre filler gap is the width most kitchen fitters leave dead. Richelieu sells a pull-out pantry frame that drops into exactly that slot, running on soft-close side runners rated for the full extension. Six steps get it in, though the measurement before you order is the one that decides whether the whole thing binds against the carcass or glides shut.
Measure the gap before you touch a catalogue
The number that matters is the clear internal width, not the 300mm the fitter quoted. A nominal 300mm cabinet gap gives you roughly 264 to 276mm of usable space once you subtract two carcass panel thicknesses at 16 or 18mm each. Richelieu builds its narrow pull-out frames to suit a 300mm cabinet opening, which means the frame itself sits around 260mm wide and expects a specific side clearance for the runner hardware.
Measure at three heights: top, middle, bottom. Carcasses go out of square when they carry weight, and a gap that reads 268mm at the plinth can pinch to 262mm at eye level where the wall cabinet load transfers down. Take the smallest of the three readings as your working width. If the narrowest point is under the frame requirement plus runner clearance (usually 8 to 12mm total across both sides), the frame will bind before it fully extends. That is the failure mode nobody photographs: a pantry that opens 200mm and stops.
Check depth too. Standard base cabinets run 560 to 580mm internal depth, and a full-extension pull-out needs the runner length to clear the door hinge swing. Richelieu specs the frame depth against the runner it ships with, so a 550mm runner in a 560mm cabinet leaves almost nothing behind the closed door.
Which runner the frame actually rides on
Soft-close side runners are the whole game here. The Richelieu narrow pantry frame typically pairs with a full-extension ball-bearing runner carrying a load rating in the 40 to 60kg range per pair, which covers a tall column of tinned goods and glass jars without sag. Load rating is stamped on the runner, not the frame, so read the runner box rather than trusting the frame’s marketing weight.
Full-extension matters more than the soft-close feature in a narrow unit. A three-quarter extension runner leaves the rear 150mm of the top basket buried behind the cabinet face, and in a 300mm-wide pantry you cannot reach around the side to fish anything out. The full-extension version pulls the entire column clear of the carcass so both faces of every basket are reachable.
Soft-close on these runners uses a fluid damper cartridge in the last 40 to 50mm of travel. In a heavily loaded larder that damper is doing real work: 50kg of groceries closing under its own momentum will slam without it. The trade-off is that the damper needs the drawer to reach a minimum closing speed to engage, so a half-hearted nudge sometimes leaves the frame sitting 15mm proud. You learn the push.
The six steps, start to bracket
Step one is dry-fitting the frame outside the cabinet to confirm the basket count and shelf spacing match what you measured for jar height. Most narrow Richelieu frames arrive with baskets on adjustable clips at 32mm increments, the same pitch as system shelving standards, so you set them before anything goes in the cabinet.
Step two: mount the runners to the cabinet side walls. Each runner has a front and rear fixing point, and the front point sets the frame’s face alignment. Use the supplied jig or a spacer block cut to the runner’s specified height off the cabinet floor, commonly 30 to 40mm, so both runners sit at identical heights. A 3mm height mismatch between left and right runners produces a rack that never runs true.
Step three: fix the frame’s carriage to the runner. On the Richelieu system this is usually a snap-in coupling at the front and a screw at the rear. Step four is hanging the front door panel on the frame’s adjustable brackets, and this is where the fitting either looks factory or looks bodged.
Step five: adjust. The door brackets give you lateral, height, and depth adjustment, typically 3 to 5mm in each axis. Step six: load-test with the weight you actually plan to store before you trust it, because an empty frame runs sweetly and a full one reveals every runner error.
The door alignment nobody budgets time for
Here is the concrete case: your gap sat between two existing cabinet doors with a 3mm reveal, and now your pull-out door has to match that reveal on both sides across its full height. Does it? Usually not on the first hang.
The front panel on a pull-out pantry is a single tall door, often 700mm or more in height for a base unit, mounted on brackets that adjust in three axes. Getting a consistent 3mm gap down both edges means adjusting the lateral position, then the height, then checking the reveal top and bottom because a door that is dead centre at the top can drift 2mm at the bottom if the frame carriage sits slightly rotated on its runners.
Richelieu’s brackets use cam adjusters you turn with a Pozidriv or a hex key depending on the generation of the hardware. The lateral cam moves the whole panel left or right against the frame. The height cam raises or drops it. Depth pulls the panel face flush with the neighbouring cabinet fronts, which on a frameless European carcass should sit proud of the carcass edge by the door thickness.
The part that eats an afternoon is that the three adjustments interact. Move the door 2mm left to fix the right-hand reveal and you have changed the effective drop, so the height reads off again. Fitters who do this daily go lateral first, lock it, then height, then depth, and accept one more pass around the loop. A tall narrow door magnifies any rotation because the pivot error at the top of a 700mm panel throws the bottom edge visibly.
One more variable: the runner drawer stop. If the frame does not close to a hard stop at a repeatable position, the reveal changes every time you shut it, and no amount of bracket adjustment fixes a moving target. Confirm the soft-close pulls the frame to the same closed position twice in a row before you spend time on the door faces.
Where the 300mm unit borrows from bigger systems

In a 300mm frame you get fewer baskets and lower per-basket load, but the principle holds. Distribute weight low. A narrow tall unit with all the tinned goods in the top basket becomes tippy on extension, and the runner rating assumes even distribution.
Adjustable shelving as the fallback
If the gap measures too tight for any frame plus runner clearance, adjustable shelving standards screwed to the cabinet interior turn the same 300mm gap into fixed open shelving at a fraction of the hardware cost. You lose the pull-out reach but keep every millimetre of the width, since there is no runner stealing 8 to 12mm.
Floating shelf load capacity is the number to watch if you go this route outside the cabinet instead. A concealed-bracket floating shelf spanning 300mm carries far more than a 900mm span of the same depth, because the bending moment scales with length. A short 300mm floating shelf on a proper concealed bracket into a stud will hold a dense row of preserving jars where a longer shelf on the same bracket would sag at the free end.
The honest comparison is reach versus width. The pull-out gives you access to the back of a deep cabinet; the shelving keeps the full opening but makes you bend and reach into the dark. Which one a 300mm slot deserves depends on what you already lose to the runner clearance, and whether the smallest of your three width measurements ever gave you room to spare in the first place.
