A sunken, leathery brown patch on the blossom end of a half-grown Roma tomato is blossom end rot. It appears when the developing fruit fails to receive enough calcium at the blossom scar during the fast cell-division stage of early fruit set. Soil calcium is usually present in adequate amounts; the problem is movement through the plant.

Calcium travels with water through the xylem and stays where it lands. A Roma carrying a dozen trusses can send most of its water flow to leaves, especially in warm weather when transpiration is high. Fruit tips then receive too little calcium at the exact point when their cells are expanding. The repair has two linked parts: a soluble calcium source available to roots immediately, and a water supply steady enough to keep transport moving.

Calcium nitrate gives the roots usable calcium quickly

Crushed eggshells, dolomite lime, and gypsum all have supporters on allotments, and all three release calcium slowly. Eggshells are calcium carbonate, which needs months and acidic soil before the calcium becomes useful to roots. By the time that release happens, the damaged trusses have finished their course.

Calcium nitrate supplies calcium in a fully water-soluble form, paired with nitrate. A practical working dilution sits around 1 to 1.5 grams per litre of water, fed weekly into the root zone through the growing season. Yara sells a horticultural grade under the Calcinit name in 25 kilogram sacks, and the same compound appears in smaller garden-centre tubs at a stiff markup. Either form dissolves clear in lukewarm water with a stir.

Keep calcium nitrate out of the same concentrate as feeds containing sulphate or phosphate. Mixed together in a strong solution, they form an insoluble precipitate that can clog drip lines and leave the plant without the intended calcium. In a two-part liquid feed programme, calcium nitrate belongs in tank A on its own, with the rest in tank B. With a watering can, the risk largely disappears because the fertiliser is fully diluted before it reaches the plant.

The nitrate half also counts as nitrogen. Heavy nitrogen late in the season encourages leaf growth at the expense of fruit. On indeterminate Romas grown through a long summer, calcium nitrate usually earns its place during the first six to eight weeks of fruit set, then the feed can taper as a high-potassium tomato feed takes over for ripening.

Keep the root zone in a narrow moisture band

A Roma plant that wilts during a hot afternoon, receives a heavy soak that evening, and dries hard again the next day is a prime candidate for end rot on the trusses filling during that swing. Even soil testing high for calcium can produce damaged fruit when water movement stalls. Calcium delivery stops with the transport stream, and the cells at the fruit tip collapse.

Containers make the swing sharper because the soil volume is small. A 40 litre pot gives far more buffer than a 15 litre pot. Terracotta also wicks moisture through its walls faster than glazed or plastic containers, so the same plant can dry at a different pace depending on the pot material.

A consistent watering setup does more work here than another bottle of feed. A Hozelock sensor timer with a soil-moisture probe can keep a raised bed or a run of pots within a steadier band than hand watering manages in hot spells. Set short, frequent cycles, such as three five-minute runs across the day, so the root zone stays damp without being saturated.

Waterlogging creates its own block. Saturated soil deprives roots of oxygen, and calcium uptake falters again. The target is even moisture, with air still present around the roots.

Raised bed drip irrigation makes that steadiness easier. A pressure-compensating dripline laid along the base of each plant, with 2 litre-per-hour emitters spaced every 30 centimetres, delivers the same volume to the tomato nearest the tap and the tomato at the far end. Cheap unregulated drip tube delivers unevenly, and the last plants on the line show more end rot as a result.

If calcium nitrate is fed through the dripline, run plain water through the line for a minute afterward. Fertiliser left sitting in emitters overnight can crystallise and narrow the flow.

A six-plant container schedule

Six Roma plants in 30 litre containers of John Innes No 3 make a useful example. John Innes No 3 is a loam-based compost with the highest nutrient charge in the range. Its clay-loam fraction holds water and calcium better than a light peat-free multipurpose compost that can dry into a hydrophobic brick.

Mix calcium nitrate at 1.2 grams per litre. Once fruit set begins, give each plant about 2 litres at a feed. For six plants, that means roughly 14.4 grams of calcium nitrate in 12 litres of water, once a week. In the crystalline product, that is a level tablespoon and a bit for the batch.

If the compost has dried, water first with plain water until it runs through. Feed poured onto bone-dry compost can travel straight out through the drainage holes, carrying much of the fertiliser with it.

Run the weekly calcium nitrate feed through the first month of fruiting. Around week five, when lower trusses are sizing well and colour begins, move calcium nitrate to fortnightly and use a high-potassium tomato feed on the alternate week for ripening and flavour. Leaves give useful feedback: dark, lush, curling foliage with sparse fruit points to too much nitrogen, so the calcium nitrate interval should widen sooner.

The limited use of foliar calcium

A calcium chloride foliar spray, aimed at the fruit trusses at about 4 grams per litre, can help trusses already forming during a bad moisture spell. It buys time while watering is corrected. The spray has to hit the fruit because calcium deposited on leaves stays in leaf tissue and will not later move into the tomato.

Strawberries, carrots, and the same patio discipline

The drip and timer setup built for tomatoes can carry other crops on a patio. Strawberries in a small space respond strongly to steady moisture during flowering and fruit swell. Everbearing types such as Albion or Malling Centenary, grown in a 20 centimetre-deep trough on the same dripline, will crop more evenly than pots watered only after drooping is visible.

Container depth is the common patio mistake with strawberries. They need root run, and a shallow window box restricts yield even when feed is adequate.

Carrots add a pest problem outside the reach of irrigation. Carrot fly, Psila rosae, finds the crop by scent, lays eggs at the crown, and the larvae tunnel through the roots. Companion planting relies on scent masking. Rows of carrots interplanted with alliums, spring onions, or chives muddy the trail.

A physical barrier helps directly. A 60 centimetre mesh or fleece fence around the bed works because the fly travels low and follows the crop line close to the ground. Thin sowing helps as well, since thinning crushes carrot foliage and releases the scent plume that attracts the fly.

Container growing links tomatoes, strawberries, and carrots through the same moisture discipline. Small soil volumes swing quickly unless something holds the band steady. Each crop shows the swing differently: blossom end rot in tomatoes, smaller fruit in strawberries, and split or forked roots in carrots.

Compost choice changes how sharp the swing feels. A loam-based John Innes mix buffers water movement; a light peat-free multipurpose can amplify drying. In that lighter mix, a moisture sensor becomes close to essential for keeping the root zone even.

Persistent end rot after four weeks of weekly feeding usually points back to uneven delivery: the compost may be drying between waterings, or the far plant on the dripline may be receiving less. Which end of the line stayed slightly dry?
