A 2-metre south wall gives a Morello cherry room for three tiers of ribs, with training wires at 30 cm intervals and enough air behind the foliage to slow disease. Felco No.2 bypass secateurs, soft jute ties, and a late June pinching round carry much of the work once the first arms are set.

Three tiers is the honest fit for a Morello cherry on a 2-metre wall. Each rib arm needs about 30 cm of vertical clearance if it is going to fruit without shading the one below. Allow 20 cm at the base for a short trunk, leave a little headroom at the top, and three pairs of arms are what the space will carry. A fourth tier usually crowds the top of the fan, where the brickwork may reflect heat yet the leaves still block enough light to leave the fruit poorly coloured. Morello is an acid cherry, and it fruits on last year’s wood, so the pruning system has to keep young wood moving through the permanent frame.

The frame is built over two or three winters. In the first year the plant is usually a maiden or a partly formed nursery fan. Choose two strong laterals low on the stem and tie them to canes held at roughly 40 degrees from the wall. Growth above that pair is removed cleanly at the union.

During the second year, shoots that break along those first arms provide material for the next tier. Space them so the ribs do not cross as they travel outwards. By the third winter the third tier can be fixed, and the outline has become the tree’s long-term shape. Later seasons concentrate on renewal.

Wire spacing for a wall-trained cherry

Use 2.5 mm to 3 mm galvanised or plastic-coated training wire, run horizontally and pulled tight with straining bolts screwed into vine eyes. Set the vine eyes so the wire stands 10 cm out from the brickwork. That gap earns its keep in summer and autumn. Leaves pressed against masonry can scorch in July, then sit in damp, still air in October. Coral spot finds that kind of sheltered dead or weakened tissue easily. The offset lets air move behind the fan.

Space the wires at 30 cm. On a 2-metre wall, useful heights are roughly 40, 70, 100, 130, 160 and 185 cm. That gives more wire lines than the number of tiers, which is deliberate. A fan sends its ribs upward on angled paths, so a single arm may cross two or three wires before it reaches its final line.

Tie each arm at every crossing. Soft jute works, as does a figure-of-eight tree tie. Nylon can cut into bark within two seasons. Inspect ties in winter and loosen any that have started to bite, because a cherry arm thickens quickly on a warm south-facing aspect.

June pinching on an acid cherry

A well-set arm may throw a dozen vigorous shoots in June. Morello behaves differently from a sweet cherry because the crop is carried on one-year-old wood. The fan needs a steady supply of new shoots to replace the wood that has just fruited.

Pinch back the sideshoots that are not needed for extending the framework to five or six leaves in late June or early July, once they have made around 20 cm of growth. This keeps the fan flat and open. It also redirects energy into buds at the base of the pinched shoot, where next year’s flowers and replacement growth will come from.

Avoid taking the whole tree in one hard pass. Go over the fan two or three times across four weeks, pinching shoots as they reach the right length. If every shoot is checked at once during a dry spell, the tree can answer with a second flush and undo the purpose of the work.

After harvest, in August, shorten the pinched shoots again to three or four leaves. On Morello, also thin some of the wood that has just fruited by cutting back to a strong young replacement shoot lower on the arm. That renewal cut is how an acid cherry keeps cropping on the same framework for fifteen years. A neglected tree often ends up carrying fruit only at the tips.

Tool choice matters on this wood. By its fourth summer, a Morello arm may be 15 mm thick at the base, which is close to the clean cutting limit for bypass secateurs. Felco No.2, or the smaller No.6, will take that diameter without crushing. A crushed wound on stone fruit gives disease an easy entry. Keep the blade sharp with the Felco 903 sharpener, and wipe it with a rag between plants when moving through a mixed border, since silver leaf spores can travel on tools.

Pruning time for stone fruit

Plums, cherries and apricots are pruned in active growth. Dormant cuts invite silver leaf, the fungus Chondrostereum purpureum, which enters through fresh wounds when sap is no longer moving strongly enough to seal them. Formative and maintenance cuts on a Morello belong between late spring and late summer, while wounds can callus within days.

Winter still has jobs: checking ties, looking at the framework, and spotting arms that need attention once growth starts. The knife stays away until buds have broken and sap is moving. The Royal Horticultural Society has advised this timing for Prunus pruning for decades, and it is the piece of practice that can separate a Morello that lasts twenty years from one that dies back in six.

Coral spot on old and failing wood

Coral spot, Nectria cinnabarina, shows itself as tiny coral-pink to orange cushions on dead and dying wood. On a wall-trained tree it is one of the easiest disease signs to recognise. It is primarily a saprophyte, living on dead material, although a stressed plant can let it move into living tissue. Pustules on a cherry arm mean the wood behind them is already dead or failing, and the fungus is using that section as a base.

Cut well back into clean, live wood, at least 10 to 15 cm below any staining visible in the cross-section. Burn or bin the prunings; keep them out of compost. The same fungus is a textbook problem on Cornus, where dogwood grown for winter stem colour often shows coral spot on older stems that should already have been coppiced out.

On the cherry, removal is the treatment. Spraying cannot match cutting away infected wood and improving the airflow that allowed the problem to settle in the first place. The 10 cm wall offset and the habit of summer pinching both help keep the fan open.

Renewal on a sixth-year arm

A third-tier arm in its sixth year may be 90 cm long, tied at three wire crossings, with fruit carried in July along the middle 50 cm. A strong 30 cm replacement shoot may also have broken near the arm’s base in June. After the last cherries are picked in August, cut the fruited section back to that younger shoot.

Make the cut just above the bud, at a slight angle, with the Felco No.2 in one clean pass. Do not saw. The replacement shoot becomes the working length of the arm for the following season, and it is tied along the same wires the older wood occupied. Half the arm has effectively been rebuilt with one cut.

Work across the fan arm by arm, taking perhaps a third of the total fruited wood each year on a rotation. That pace prevents any single arm from getting old and bare through the middle. The common tidy-up mistake is to renew everything in one season, which removes too much fruiting wood and leaves the tree rebuilding before it crops properly again. A third a year keeps cherries coming from every tier while younger shoots move into place. The replacements used in August exist because June pinching pushed energy into basal buds two months earlier.

Central leaders and wall edges

A pear on the same wall would be trained around a central leader, with tiered branches spaced up one dominant stem. A formed Morello fan has no leader. Forcing one produces a vertical whip that shades the arms below, while the fan form deliberately suppresses that dominance.

The awkward part comes at the edges of a 3-metre-wide bay. The outer lower arms eventually reach the corner and run out of horizontal space. At the wall edges, should those ribs bend upward against the fan’s grain, or should a bare triangle of brick remain where the geometry has run out of room?
